About the artist

I am Saskia Vlieghe, a visual artist from Ostend. My paintings and drawings revolve around atmosphere and sensitivity — two forces that together determine what an image leaves behind in the viewer. I look for the moment just before silence speaks.

My work has a cinematic atmosphere and is deliberately open to interpretation. Through a layered image structure and the use of chiaroscuro — the tension between light and dark — I create a space that I leave for the viewer to fill. No ready-made stories, just images that linger.

In my recent work, I draw inspiration from Leon Spilliaert—his sense of darkness, the coast, and inner tension reflects something that is also strongly present in my own work. In addition, I let myself be guided by what moves me: a film, a unique play of light, or a mood that is hard to put into words.
